Custom Orthotics

Utilizing the most up-to-date computer technology, our office can digitally record your foot prints as you walk, providing a computerized imprint of your feet.

A pair of custom orthotics is then fabricated for you with this information along with several measurements and recordings that Dr. Sheff takes of your feet.

About Orthotics

Your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. When a small problem develops in your feet, the subtle change in the way you walk can cause a chain reaction of adjustments in your posture and walking mechanics. These changes can put stress on joints higher up in your body and lead to more serious problems. Orthotics help rebalance your feet, reduce pain and discomfort by enhancing your body's natural movements.

Prescriptive orthotics look like innersoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific imbalance. Orthotics work on your feet much like eyeglasses work on your eyes — they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. Orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

Properly made orthotics are custom made to support the requirements of your feet. They help restore the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities.

How Are Orthotics Made?

At Newport Family Foot Care, Dr. Sheff utilizes the most up-to-date computer technology to fashion custom orthotics as follows:

  1. Dr. Sheff will have you walk across a pressure plate where thousands of tiny sensors capture the distribution of pressure of your foot over time.
  2. From your steps, a computer displays two and three dimensional images of the pressure under your feet. This allows one to see where they have too little, or too much pressure.
  3. The information is summarized in a report that can be printed for you or your primary care physician to see. The report findings help determine if the pain you are experiencing is related to faulty foot function.
  4. Based on the report and gait scan analysis, Dr. Sheff can determine if you require orthotics
  5. Information about you, including your weight, shoe size, foot problem as well as the scan of your feet is then electronically transmitted to a laboratory that manufactures your custom orthotics in a timely fashion.
